History of TV thrillers
History of
TV Thrillers:
It could be argued that the
thriller genre television programmes started gaining popularity in Britain
around the 1970s. With shows such as Public Eye (1965-1975) and Five Red
Herrings (1975) bosting a lead male experienced detective solving crimes. All of these
thrillers where mainly detective thrillers following the same whodunnit style
and narrative with the detective being successful at the end.
In the 1980s there was a particular programme that subverted the repeated genre traits at the time, and this is The Gentle Touch (1980) which features the first female lead in a detective genre series played by Jill Gascoine. Another anomaly from the stereotypical conventions of the detective thriller genre was Star Cops (1987) in which elements of sci-fi where included.
In the 1990s, the thriller
genre was well established and allowed for more experiments within genre such as
Underworld (1997) which was a comedy and thriller hybrid. Another notable crime
thriller that began its long run was Silent Witness (1996) which now has 28
seasons and a refreshed cast.
Whilst the
detective/police thriller subgenre still remains dominant in modern shows, some
other adaptations of the thriller include His Dark Materials (2019) which
combines a fantasy element and also The Outlaws (2021) combines elements of a
thriller but is mainly a comedy.
